LONDON
(all you need to know)
This page is intended for first time visitors who feel intimidated by the sheer size of the capital. Here is some basic information that might add to the pleasure of a visit to London:
GETTING TO LONDON
A 36 minute train ride from Taplow will get you to London Paddington. Trains run from Taplow every half hour for most of the day and the last one back leaves Paddington around midnight, but Taplow station is closed on Sundays. The station is less than a mile from Woodford House. You can park your car at the station, also taxis are available at the station.
For best value buy a cheap day return to Paddington with a Travelcard added on. The cost of the add on is nominal and will give you free travel on London’s busses and underground trains.
GETTING AROUND LONDON
Paddington is an excellent station for connecting with London’s buses and underground trains. Forget about expensive taxis and tour buses - all of central London can be quickly and easily reached via the underground system.
Riding on the upper deck of a red bus is the very best way to see London. There are several hundred London bus routes, but don’t panic! Transport for London (“tfl”) publish an excellent tourist leaflet with a map showing the major tourist attractions and the bus routes that serve them. The same site has a wealth of tourist info, also look at visitlondon.com – you will probably find these two sites as good as any guidebook.
WALKING AND CYCLING IN LONDON
For walking routes and events visit tfl.gov.uk/walking and for more than 4,000km of cycling routes visit tfl.gov.uk/cycling.
